What Is a Doula?

The term Doula is derived from Greek origins and means “servant-woman”. A doula in modern times is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother-to-be during pregnancy, throughout labor and shortly after birth, and during the postpartum period in order for the woman to achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience.
Doulas Make Birth Better
Doulas have an incredible impact on both mother and baby’s well-being, as well as improved physical outcomes for birth. There is remarkable evidence that shows how birth doulas improve outcomes. According to a 2017 Cochrane Database Systematic Review, “Continuous support in labor may improve outcomes for women and infants, including increased spontaneous vaginal birth, shorter duration of labour, and decreased cesarean birth, instrumental vaginal birth, use of any analgesia, use of regional analgesia, low five-minute Apgar score and negative feeling about childbirth experiences. Continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the woman’s own network, is experienced in providing labor support, and has at least a modest amount of training appears beneficial.”
